Bayer's K-O Tab® 1-2-3 receives WHOPES interim recommendation

The 10th WHO Pesticide Evaluation Scheme (WHOPES) Working Group Meeting, held in WHO/HQ, Geneva, 11-14 December 2006 has evaluated the product K-O TAB® 1-2-3 and gave an interim recommendation for its use in treatment of mosquito nets for malaria prevention and control.

K-O TAB® 1-2-3 is evaluated as innovative technology to be used as a "dip-it-yourself" kit for the in-field treatment of white, colored, washed polyester mosquito nets. Those nets treated with the product are wash resistant for a maximum of 15 washes, a major breakthrough and achievement for a longer lasting effect compared to a conventional treatment without wash resistance. This means with the average lifespan of polyester nets in Africa (2.5 years) and the average washing frequencies (2-4 / year), it is very unlikely that the point of 15 washes will be reached at all. If 15 washes are reached the net should be re-treated. With this long lasting wash resistance K-O TAB® 1-2-3 is unique in this market segment of in-field treatments / re-treatments.

The Expert Committee on Chemical Safety (PCS) and the peer reviewer (Finnish Institute for Occupational Health) evaluated the Human Risk Assessment of the product and found the product to be safe for impregnating and washing the nets even by amateur users and sleeping under the nets for all age groups.
