Mali
had a population of 12.0 million in 2004, with about 64% of the
population below the poverty line. The GDP per capita is US$900.
The GDP growth rate is about 0.5%.
Malaria
is endemic throughout the more populated southern half of the
country, with over 90% of the total population at risk of stable
endemic malaria. Malaria accounts for 33% of doctor-patient consultations
and, according to the MOH, is responsible for 13% of all mortality
and 15.6% of morbidity in Mali.
The
National Malaria Control program includes insecticide treated
mosquito nets as a key strategy for malaria control.
In
April 2001, the value-added tax (VAT) and tariffs were lifted
from both imported and locally produced mosquito nets to reduce
costs and facilitate greater access to impregnated mosquito nets.
However, insecticide retreatment taxes still remain at 5% tariff
and 18% VAT. To date Mali is among only 17 nations who have removed
taxes on initial ITNs.

NetMark's
Work in Mali
According to the DHS over 50% of Malian households own at least
one mosquito net; very few of them are treated. NetMark is working
with its partners in support of the National Malaria Control Programme
to create a sustainable market for ITNs. NetMark is also coordinating
efforts with PSI and others to ensure maximum impact.
